The laboratory was originally part of the DSIR (Department of Scientific and
Industrial Research). In 1982, the present
laboratory manager, Jim Polaschek,
was employed by DSIR to further develop the laboratory. Telarc registration was
first obtained in 1984.
In July 1994, the laboratory was privatized and now operates as an
independent entity, first under the name
"Temperature Measurement
Services", and now as "Thermocal Laboratory Ltd".
Telarc registration has been maintained and the temperature range for
calibrations has been extended. With the
reorganising and renaming of Telarc in
1997, the laboratory is now referred to as an IANZ accredited calibration
laboratory.
The aim of the laboratory is to provide a service to industries and other
organisations that require temperature
measuring instruments to be calibrated.
The laboratory can calibrate instruments from -40°C to 1050°C, using liquid
calibration baths and a furnace. Reference instruments used are three platinum
resistance thermometers and a
platinum/rhodium thermocouple. The reference
instruments are calibrated by a national standards laboratory.
| The laboratory is committed to implementing procedures that are in accordance
with good laboratory management practice, and that will ensure a high level of
technical competence is maintained. The laboratory complies with International
Standard ISO/IEC 17025:2005, "General requirements for the competence of
testing and calibration laboratories".
