Transport of Mercury-in-Glass Thermometers Home Page
Thermocal Laboratory is accredited to calibrate
liquid-in-glass thermometers. Most of the thermometers are mercury in glass.
The
laboratory has stirred liquid baths that cover the range from -40°C to 400°C.
Best measurement capability is as follows:
Because mercury is classed as dangerous goods, there are special requirements
when mercury-in-glass thermometers are
transported. The requirements are more
severe when thermometers are sent by air (and cost is considerably greater), and
it
is recommended that they be sent by surface freight.
Please contact the laboratory if you would like information on packaging and
transporting mercury-in-glass thermometers by
surface freight. We can post you
an information sheet, dangerous goods form and the relevant dangerous goods label.
If you are situated in Christchurch, it is suggested that you deliver the
thermometer by hand, or arrange for the laboratory to
collect the thermometer.
After calibration, the normal procedure is to return the thermometer by hand.
